Michael Wiens is a Canadian-born artist and an MFA Graduate from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, CA. In 2004, he received a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Design from the University of Alberta, where he studied printmaking, painting and visual communications.
While maintaining a studio practice in downtown Edmonton, Michael began painting murals and backdrops for musical performances at several local Elementary schools. A desire to be immersed in the Elementary art curriculum led him to complete a Bachelors of Education in Elementary Education from the University of Alberta in 2009. In this same year, he received the 'Leadership Recognition Award' from the faculty of education, which honored his commitment to quality elementary instruction.
In 2010, Michael expanded his abstract and mixed media interests into the area of contemporary realism and began study at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. His current series combines classical figurative painting with aspects of decorative design and mixed media.
Michael’s pieces have been exhibited at the Palace of Fine Art and at the Cannery Gallery, in San Francisco. In 2013 he was awarded ‘Editor’s Choice’ in the ‘Artist Portfolio Magazine’, and was a portrait/figure finalist in ‘The Artist’s Magazine’. In 2014, Michael exhibited his recent works at the 7th annual Pebble Beach Food & Wine festival - a premiere epicurean event on the west coast. Under representation by Anne Thull, his current works may be viewed at the San Francisco Design Center, and in Carmel California.
